Nancy Astor was born 1879 in Virginia. Her father was a Confederate officer, who later became a successful tobacco auctioneer. He refused to let her go to college, a fact she always resented. Nancy Astor decided to run for the seat that Waldorf vacated when he was made a Lord. Her campaign slogan: 'Vote for Lady Astor and your children will weigh more.' She worked for temperance, women's rights, and children's rights. Some memorable quotations: 'I married beneath me - all women do'. 'One reason I don't drink is that I want to know when I am having a good time'. 'The only thing I like about rich people is their money'. She died in 1964 •
